When I was young...

As I was eating my lunch earlier at Goldilocks, I was reminded of how I used to love their dinuguan dish when I was younger. I remember how it tasted and I also remember how long the line gets when Goldilocks used to have the "point-point" system where you have to select from a number of different dishes in front of you. You can even watch how they make fresh lumpiang ubod from scratch and on the way to the cashier you will see the number of desserts they have available. Now everything's changed, from their dishes to their cakes, everything seems different. The dinuguan did not taste the same as it was back then when my mom and I used to eat there. And before, you have to wait for somebody else to finish eating before you can get a seat which makes it more challenging to eat there. But now since it was too commercialized you can eat there anytime you want without waiting.

Another good example is KFC, when I was younger none of my friends would dare eat at that place because we thought it was expensive. Since we were just kids, our parents are usually the ones who pay when we eat out. Back then we only have one KFC branch near our town and you have to travel all the way to Alabang just to get there. Whenever my mom would take me there, I could eat 3 extra rice wih a serving of a single piece of chicken (takaw). I especially love their gravy that you have to buy extra if you run out. Today a piece of KFC chicken will cost you 87php and consider yourself lucky if they have a big part available. Good thing about this though is that you can have all the gravy that you want. The gravy that is placed on a thermos where people are instructed "not to bring the thermos to your table but they still do". Another good thing is that they have deviced a thermal canister where people who can't read will understand that they cannot bring the thermos to their table. All in all with the taste of their chicken, KFC has not changed as much and added new things on their menu. But as expected the price has skyrocketted from the times where we thought it was already expensive.

The Pancake House. This is one of my favorite place to eat at when I was younger. My mom, being a food lover as I was would take me there after we had our weekly stroll at ATC. She would order for me one of their bundles that has a piece of chicken, spaghetti and taco on the side. Their pricing has changed since then but I still love the taste and the serving size that this place provides. And being a movie lover that I am, this place has huge posters of movies from the 80's that they still do today. But since they have have remodeled into a much more hippier look, it doesn't give me the same the old cozy feeling that it does when I was younger but I still go here occassionally though, when I'm craving for a grilled cheese sandwich or any other anytime breakfast that I want to eat during odd hours of the day.

Only a child who didn't live in the 80's will not remember the Magnolia Chocolait that comes in a glass bottle! I so love the chocolatey goodness of this milk that my mom would only let me drink in the morning and I have to share it with my older brother. They have repackaged and placed this on a tetra pack now. Just yesterday I got one from 711.

And lastly, who's haven't heard of Yakult? I have been drinking this stuff even before I started going to school. And out of all the things I have posted here, this is the only thing that is ever constant and never changing. They still have that residue that is left on your throat everytime you drink it. Everytime we got home from the grocery I will hold a bottle of this yummy goodness and my mom would tell me not to drink it because it's already late and I will tell her "hahawakan ko lang.". Before I fell asleep the same bottle I was holding will be empty as I have already punch a tiny hole on top. Do you ever wonder why Yakult never changed? Packaging, taste and all? I received an email before on as to why Yakult always has the same quality but let's not go into that. This drink is so good I wish it comes it Litro packs!

Sometimes it makes me wonder what makes a something delicious. Is it just me, or is the quality of things around you changed? Is it the memory of a certain dish reminds you of the good old times you shared with someone or is it the dish that is really good? Whatever the answer is, there are just some things that will remain the same over the years and some that will be better and some that will go for the worst.
